Act 1 Scene 6

Tuesday 7 October 2008

Rita's been to see a play by Shakespeare for the first time and comes quickly to Frank's office to tell him about it. She found it absolutely interesting and wants to share it with someone that she knows can understand what she feels.
Rita uses words to express her enthusiasm for Macbeth such as "...it was bleeding' great, honest, ogh, it done me in, it was fantastic" or "What I couldn't get over is how excitin' it was", "An that fantastic bit where he meets Macduff an' he thinks he's all invincible. I was at the edge of my seat at that bit. I wanted to shout out an' tell Macbeth, warn him.", "It was dead good. It was like a thriller."
She wouldn't be allowed to use these kind of expresions when writing an essay, but perhaps she'll be able to put in into more appropiate words and write an interesting essay on the play.

Hi Adriana!

Your post got me thinking about two issues:
* the importance of learners trusting the teacher (as you 've wisely pointed out, Rita wouldn't have come to Frank if she didn't believe he can understand how she feels about it all);
* when you discuss the use of language in academic essays, you've used "wouldn't be allowed" and "appropriate"... So the question would be: who controls school, and who sets standards in the academic world? How coherent is this with a democratic world (which is expected to be the aim of our educational system, right?)

Keep your incredible blog growing!
Love,

Gladys

Hi Gladys:

I think it's very important to feel that your teacher understands you, takes you into account and encourages you to move on. What's more, Frank is the only person that understands and supports Rita, and sometimes teachers are more than that, they advise you and hear your concerns. And for Rita's growth, that's vital.

It's true that our educational system should be democratic, but we can't expect to have freedom to do whatever we want without meeting certain standards because that would make it impossible for the teachers to evaluate so many students. Besides, school also prepares us to face the world outside school, in which there are certain rules to follow for the sake of order. However, it would be great if each children could express themselves in the way they feels more comfortable and not in a way that is impossed to them by the authorities.
